Winner: Erica Brown, RN – Outpatient Care Unit

Erica Brown, RN is the July 2018 Daisy Award Honoree. Erica has been an RN with GCRMC for 6 years however; her nursing career includes a lot of experience as she has worked in the medical/surgical floor, recovery room, and currently is in the Outpatient Care Unit of surgical services.  Here is her nomination story:

“My husband and I found out we had lost our unborn child. We had come into the OCU department for an unexpected procedure and as you can imagine, I was distraught and in disbelief. Working at GCRMC as an RN myself, I was nervous of people recognizing me and afraid of losing some of my dignity during the process. Erica was the RN that took care of me in the pre-op area before my procedure. She was extremely professional and never once made me feel uncomfortable in any way. She was compassionate towards our situation and offered emotional support when needed. She was truly sincere with her words and made the experience a great one, given the circumstances. She was an amazing nurse and is a great role model for us fellow nurses. So much so that I hope to provide the same extraordinary care to my patients every single day and leave them with the same feeling that she gave me.”

Erica became a nurse thanks to her mother, Jacqueline, who is also a nurse and whose compassion in the profession inspired Erica to want to make caring for others her every day mission. Erica is a native to Alamogordo, as is her husband of 8 years, Raymond. Erica spends her free time with her husband, family, and three dogs (Sadie, Frodo, and Sam). Thank you for everything you do Erica and Congratulations!

The Daisy Foundation was founded by the Barnes family in memory of their son Patrick. Patrick died in 1999 at the age of 33 after being diagnosed with an auto-immune disease. Patrick was hospitalized for 8 weeks. His family was impressed with the excellent nursing care he received. The Barnes Family set up the Daisy Award (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) to say thank you to the nurses around the world providing excellent care to patients and families.
