Letter from the Director

Dear Prospective Resident,

Thank you for visiting our website! We are excited that you are interested in being part of the newest Family Medicine residency in the great state of New Mexico, truly the Land of Enchantment. We are honored to join a distinguished group of programs that are training excellent family physicians for our state and the other underserved regions of the Southwest.

Our vision is to deploy well trained family physicians into our own community of Alamogordo as well as the surrounding rural areas within the southern part of our state. To that end, we have assembled an enthusiastic cadre of family physicians and specialists who are committed to making your years of training fruitful and sending you into practice confident that you can provide excellent care to the patients you will encounter throughout your career.

What makes Alamogordo unique is that you will be trained in an independent community hospital with no competing residency programs. On your rotations, you will have the opportunity to learn one-on-one from practicing physicians who are enthusiastic about teaching their skills and allowing you to learn procedures that you can take into your future practice. The hospital recently invested over 1 million dollars to build a state-of-the-art residency clinic. You will have the opportunity to learn in a beautiful, modern space while enjoying the amenities of our hospital and specialty clinics, all within a short drive (usually 10 minutes or less) of CHRISTUS Southern New Mexico Family Medicine Clinic.

We also believe strongly in maintaining work life balance. Outside of work hours, you can visit the spectacular White Sands National Monument, head 15 miles east for cool mountain hiking in Cloudcroft, or go just a bit further for skiing in Ruidoso. In town, we have a modern 10-screen movie theater, a family fun center, and pistachio farms and wineries. With an air force base just outside our city limits, Alamogordo is a diverse community with many young families and abundant opportunities for youth sports and other activities. Camping and other outdoor recreation are within a short drive of our centrally located city. If you want a taste of the big city, El Paso is less than 90 miles south. The international airport in El Paso offers flights to most major cities.

Lastly, you will have the opportunity to participate in international medical care experiences. Whether short term trips with one of your attendings or full 4-week international rotations, we believe strongly that going outside of the country will add a perspective to your training and experience that is nearly impossible to garner any other way.

We look forward to reviewing your application and meeting you during the interview season! Please contact us if you have any questions.

Kind regards,
Leandrita Ortega, MD
