Position Title:
Coder/Abstractor
Position Purpose:
Codes diagnosis and procedures from medical records for the purpose of reimbursement, research and compliance with regulations. Coordinates follow-up to assure records are coded and data is entered consistent with requirements. This description is not intended to be a complete list of duties. Minimum Qualifiactions:
High School Diploma or Equivalent. Formal education in coding preferred. Formal education in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology or equivalent experience. Medical office or Health Information Management Department experience in coding preferred. Working knowledge of ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 coding standards and practices preferred. Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Registered Health Information Technician (R.H.I.T.) or Registered Health Information Administrator (R.H.I.A.) preferred. The specialist should possess in-depth knowledge of the medical record content and sequence. The specialist should possess in-depth knowledge of coding/classification systems appropriate for inpatient, outpatient or emergency care, depending on duties assigned. The specialist should be knowledgeable of use of coding software.
